Project Overview:

This project is a statistical, technical scouting analysis for Birmingham City FC. It was made as part of the Data Analysis and Visualization module within the MSc Sports Performance Analysis programme at Middlesex University, London. It utilizes player data from Statsbomb, IBM SPSS for statistical calculations, R and Python programming for data visualizations, and Tableau for the interactive data-driven dashboard.

Based on a squad analysis of Birmingham City, I concluded that they need to prioritise on recruting a defensive midfielder, especially after two transfer windows focused on strenghtening their attack. The defensive midfielder is part of a two-man pivot, and plays a major role during Birmingham City’s build-up phases and defensive transitions. The presentation attached below includes:

  • Brief review of Birmingham City’s seasonal performance at the time of the analysis.

  • Squad analysis

  • Positional characteristics and target player profile

  • Statistical Methodology

  • Final results, player shortlist, and recommendation.

  • An interactive tableau dashboard to compare all players that fit the target player profile to Birmingham City’s current players.
